The Algarve in May: Lagos and Ferragudo under EUR 95

The Algarve has a second life between April and June, and it is the better one. Lagos for evenings, Ferragudo for sleep
Lagos keeps the practical stock: guesthouses inside the old walls, a few streets from the avenue that leads west to the Ponta da Piedade headland, with restaurants, a railway station and the town's evening life within five minutes on foot. Ferragudo, across the Arade from Portimao, is the quieter and prettier answer, a fishing village of whitewashed lanes where the guesthouses sit above the quay and the fish comes off the boats in the morning. The sensible division, and one the timetable allows daily: sleep in Ferragudo, spend the evenings in Lagos, and let the cliff walks of the Ponta fill the days between.
What May delivers
The May double is a real room: terracotta floors, a powerful shower, a small fridge and, in most houses, a terrace or at least a balcony over a lane. The Atlantic is the honest catch: about nineteen degrees, bracing rather than warm, ideal for the cliff path and for the first confident swims of the season in the sheltered coves. Guests who need bath warm water should follow the June calendar of the Sithonia note, where the same weeks already swim several degrees warmer. Breakfast, where the rate includes it, is a terrace matter: orange cake, tostas mistas and coffee until ten thirty, with the town cafes offering the same for EUR 4 to 5 when a change is wanted.
The cliffs themselves set the week's shape. The steps and boardwalks of the Ponta da Piedade drop to grottoes reached by boat trips from the Lagos marina, the coastal path to the Praia do Camilo is a staircase worth the thighs, and the church on the hill above Ferragudo gives the widest river view on the coast for the price of a climb. Inland, the train from Portimao reaches Silves in about twenty minutes, where the red sandstone castle explains the Moorish chapter of the Algarve without a queue in May.

Trains, transfers and taxes
From Lisbon the train runs to Lagos in about four hours through Tunes, the final stretch hugging the water; for Ferragudo, leave at Estombar or Portimao and take a ten minute taxi over the bridge. Faro airport serves the coast too, with a train or bus connection to Lagos of roughly two hours. The municipalities add a tourist tax of one to two euros a night; when a listing forgets to mention it, the omission fails one of the six checks that predict the final bill. July reverses every advantage of the season and August doubles it; the fair bands belong to May, June and the second half of September, and the sea stays swimmable well into October for anyone who came for the walks anyway.

The guesthouse stock is honest and vertical, which makes the listing note quick work:
- Windows: ask which way the terrace faces; the afternoon sun is the asset and the liability.
- Lift: village houses climb; three floors with luggage is a May decision, not a discovery.
- Noise: Lagos inside the walls carries the bars; Ferragudo sleeps by the tide.
- Breakfast: included terrace tables are the norm; price the exception against the town cafes.
- Distance: station to door in minutes; Lagos is walkable, Ferragudo wants the taxi budget noted.
- Small print: the municipal tourist tax of one to two euros a night, on the bill or refused.
Mistakes to avoid
The recurring errors: booking Faro flights for a Lagos week without pricing the transfer hours; assuming May means swimming weather for everyone, when nineteen degrees is a fact to accept before paying; treating August as a price problem rather than a crowds problem, since no band in the table describes it; and skipping the train for a hire car in a season when parking inside the walls is the only real difficulty. The booking window note holds here with one local change: two weeks out is a strategy in May, not a risk.
